We Are the Weather

If we think of ourselves as we think of the weather, warmer, hotter, cooler, cold, cloudy, sunny, stormy, calm, wet or dry, we can begin to see ourselves clearly. We can begin to see ourselves as an infinite number of interconnected elements, from the ground of our feet to the sky of our minds--our hearts, the sun in the center of it all. Nature poets, and scientists, philosophers, sages and seekers all draw analogies and create metaphors comparing our bodies to the body of the earth, to the elements, to the stars and universes, yet we often fall into the mistake of thinking ourselves separate from the trees, the grass, the birds the fish, even the other mammals. In nature we see the changes and marvel, the sunset, the sunrise, the storm, the summer heat, new life emerging in the spring and returning to the earth in the fall—when we learn to see ourselves as part of nature, as naturally changeable, life becomes much easier. If we stop trying to change what we don't like and hold onto what we do, if we learn to appreciate all types of weather, in our own hearts and minds and in those of others, then we truly become nature lovers.
